Drink rosé, champagne and French martinis at Entrecote South Yarra

Have you been to visit the tres chic Entrecôte yet? The main focus of the new French eatery is to serve up steakfrites (in this instance Hopkins River porterhouse with french fries) but there is much to tempt we barflies too. Aside from the gorgeous old building lovingly revamped by Flack Studios in an non-obviously French country house style, and the views to the nearby Botanical Gardens; a geranium-strewn balcony, private dining room and fabulously sunny tiled patio will please aesthetes in and of themselves (if you can secure a coveted spot).

Who can resist the promise of “Champagne, morning, noon and night”? At Entrecôte the bubbles/bulle offering consists of six proper champagnes plus one French and one local interloper. Save your pennies for the priciest of  bunch the Egly Ouriet Grand Cru Brut Tradition at $240 a pop of the cork. A short and sweet cocktail list leans towards infamous classics like the French 75, the Kir Royal and French martinis (of course) plus the L’Piaf  – vodka, St. Germain, soda, lime, cucumber –  in ode to cabaret queen Edith Piaf.

Speaking of music, you’re as likely to hear La Vie En Rose here as you are to listen to modern Parisian pop or a self-concious Bon Jovi cover by some young chanteuse. A fitting soundtrack as you sip your rosé (which they adore at Entrecôte). Proprietor Jason Jones is happy for visitors to forgo steak and simply sit and sip whatever their hearts desire. However, should you be in need of sustenance of the non-liquid variety, the exclusive bar (and patio) menu features the likes of gougère pastries, terrines and quiches as well as the opportunity to practice your accent.

A Happy Hour combo of oysters and Mumm has proven popular thus far, as has the entrecôte cheeseburger, especially come closer to midnight when the space gets its second wind (though dare I suggest the chocolate and brandy mousse to set you off course if the Grand Cru hasn’t already?)
