As of tonight – and through this winter’s Friday and Saturday evenings – Lucky Penny cafe becomes the Hunter’s Kitchen. Chef Jason Chan has been inspired by the outdoors-men, Vikings and all things Nordic-ly wintry to create a menu of belly-warmers to keep us from hibernation. But mostly, I’m looking forward to trying their extensive new drinks (or “Getränk”) list to go with all the the feasting! There will be mulled Gluhwein, spiced spirits, Christmas-y mint and all manner of retro, ski lodge-esque tipples on offer. I’d even be game to try the ‘Golden Elk’ shot, a potentially dastardly combination of of Jagermeister and cinnamon schnapps. Sip these as you are surrounded with the sights of pine cones and branches, the feel of a cosy blanket plus the comforting fragrance of woodland-scented candles and piping hot huntsman’s stews.
Just the sound of it already puts the rose back in my frostbitten cheeks!
The Hunter’s Kitchen is at 481 Chapel Street, South Yarra.
